Power Networking Floating on the Caribbean
I am in Cancun last summer floating on a raft in the
Caribbean Sea when I float by another guy floating
on a raft in the Caribbean Sea. This “floater” turns
out to be a Senior Vice President at IBM. When he
asks me what I do, I tell him I help my clients
increase their bottom line revenues with little or
no expense. He was intrigued.
I told him why I do it is because most companies
have untapped gold, and by helping them mine it,
I am creating a huge win for everyone. I also told
him that I am really good at it, that it gives me a
lot of personal satisfaction and professional payoff.
I go on to explain how I actually do it.
We get out of the water, I scribble down his email
address on a napkin, and offer to send him my book.
Two weeks later I email him for his address and mail
my book. I suggest he look at my website. I email
him a special report on what he told me he was
most interested in reading.
Important lesson:
First, KNOW about the other person before you tell
him what you do. Ask questions like,
“What’s your biggest challenge, frustration, concern?”
“What is your best opportunity?”
“What is your target for this year?”
“What would make this year your best year ever?”
“What one thing would make the biggest impact?”
Knowing what he is looking for, I tailor my message
and offer a solution that interests him. The result:
In December, he asked me to join his managers and
leaders in Chicago and speak to them for three hours.
In January, he asked me to do a teleconference with
his entire management team.
In February, he asked me to meet his biggest client
team in Miami to facilitate their planning retreat.
Now, we are discussing a bigger, deeper and longer
relationship. I met this man floating on a raft in
the Caribbean.
