What’s the Lifetime Value of a Skill?

What is your MOST VALUABLE skill?

How much do you estimate this skill has been worth to you in the marketplace to date?

What was the biggest return you ever got from a financial investment?

NOW…

Compare the return on your best investment with the total lifetime value to date of your best skill!

When I did this exercise recently, I was floored by the difference between my best investment and the lifetime value of my best skill. It wasn’t even close.

So I compared my next best investment with the lifetime value of my next best skill, and did it again and again until I compared my 5 best investments with my 5 best skills.

The difference between my best investments and my BEST SKILLS was eye popping.
SEVEN FIGURES.

Do this today. Take 10 minutes, and estimate the value of your best skill; what has it been worth to you in dollars?

Write that on a Post-It note and stick it somewhere so you see it every day. It will remind you to do something today to build your skills.

Great financial wealth is built by leveraging ideas, people, products, services, innovations, money or any other asset that can increase in value geometrically. It pays to invest smartly in financial assets that can build wealth.

Skill is a personal asset.

It pays off as much, and often more, to invest in your personal assets than in financial assets.

Skills are the tools you bring to the game.

Professional athletes watch their skills deteriorate with every passing game, every new season puts them one closer to retirement. Eventually, every professional athlete leaves the game.

It’s different for you and me. Invest in YOUR skills, they improve with age. Success by seniority is no longer a viable career path. A person with one year of experience 20 times over will not win in the new game.

Beyond the financial and market value, there is also immeasurable instrinsic value.

Self-expression.

Contrary to what “The Apprentice” TV show declares, it’s not JUST business.

IT IS PERSONAL.

Do you notice it’s always the winners of the game who chant the “it’s nothing personal” mantra?

The NEW Game IS NOT just business.

It’s personal.
Business is personal because work is personal.

Work is how we contribute to others and serve in the world.

Money is a medium of exchange.
Money has NO intrinsic value.

Work is how we express who we are.
Work HAS intrinsic value.

At work, you express uniqueness, completion, wholeness.

Work is personal.
Business is personal.
Life is personal.

Skill building is personal.
It’s also measurable in both quality and quantity.

I call life skills for business and business skills for life…
